Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Trooper Darryl Louis Haywood, Sr.

My deepest sympathy to Linda and the entire Haywood family. Darryl was a good cop and I'll often reflect upon our good times together working in the 44 Pct. May God Bless Darryl Haywood.

May God Bless Darryl's family...........Nothing more need be said except we grieve for the loss of a brother and fallen comrade. But our loss pales in comparison to the loss of a husband.......to the loss of a father. May comfort in some way find Darryl's family, his friends, and all those whom his life touched. While our hearts swell with anger over yet another senseless tragedy, let us fondly remember Darryl and find comfort where we can. God speed Darryl........

Darryl,
We are lonely here without you. Our hearts ache because we are missing you so much. Know that we will always keep the memory of your smile in our hearts. Until we are together again....

Darryl was a great officer, and most of all a great person. I met Trooper Haywood back in 2001 while gassing up my motocycle. We spoke and I noticed he spoke with a city accent, and sure enough he was a retired NYPD detective. From that day on we kept in touch. There is a empty spot under the LPGA overpass where Daryll would love to sit to get his speeders. Darryl your now in a better place, may you rest in peace. To his family, I am sorry for your losses.

Rest in peace...

May you look over all of us.

To Ofc Haywood's family I extend my deepest simpathies. I know the path you are on, I have been there too. I am nearly 12 years further down it. My older brother, Ofc Todd Stone EOW 01-27-93, was taken from my family in a vehicle pursuit accident as well. I can't go to work without a thought of what would things been like if only that utility pole had been 10 feet further down the road. Why did it have to be right in your path? But these things happen. As an officer I know tomorrow I could suffer the same fate. I think my comfort comes from knowing that Todd swore an oath to discharge the duties of the office of police officer to the best of his ability and it was in that endeavor that he fell. There is great honor in that. I hope Officer Haywood's family will remember this and take it as some form of peace. Never forget. Take the good he put in your lives and lock it away forever.

The watch is ours now brother.

Please remember the fallen officers we have lost. Remember the men and women who died trying to make this world a safer and better place for us all to live in. Thank you Trooper Haywood for a job well done. Please continue to watch over us and protect us as only you can. You will forever be at our side and in our hearts.

For those of you who still have loved ones with us please take the time to tell them how much you appreciate and care about them.

IF I KNEW

If I knew it would be the last time
That I'd see you fall asleep,
I would tuck you in more tightly
and pray the Lord, your soul to keep.

If I knew it would be the last time
that I see you walk out the door,
I would give you a hug and kiss
and call you back for one more.

If I knew it would be the last time
I'd hear your voice lifted up in praise,
I would video tape each action and word,
so I could play them back day after day.

If I knew it would be the last time,
I could spare an extra minute
to stop and say "I love you,"
instead of assuming you would KNOW I do.

If I knew it would be the last time
I would be there to share your day,
Well I'm sure you'll have so many more,
so I can let just this one slip away.

For surely there's always tomorrow
to make up for an oversight,
and we always get a second chance
to make everything just right.

There will always be another day
to say "I love you,"
And certainly there's another chance
to say our "Anything I can do?"

But just in case I might be wrong,
and today is all I get,
I'd like to say how much I love you
and I hope we never forget.

Tomorrow is not promised to anyone,
young or old alike,
And today may be the last chance
you get to hold your loved one tight.

So if you're waiting for tomorrow,
why not do it today?
For if tomorrow never comes,
you'll surely regret the day,

That you didn't take that extra time
for a smile, a hug, or a kiss
and you were too busy to grant someone,
what turned out to be their one last wish.

So hold your loved ones close today,
and whisper in their ear,
Tell them how much you love them
and that you'll always hold them dear

Take time to say "I'm sorry,"
"Please forgive me," "Thank you," or "It's okay."
And if tomorrow never comes,
you'll have no regrets about today.

Darryl was a real gem. If we had more LEO's like him we would be so much better off. Never quick to pre-judge, always thinking ahead and analyzing the situation, never over anxious in a heated situation and ALWAYS willing to help--that was Darryl. There are so many lessons that other troopers and deputies could learn from Darryl. Let's hope that in light of his death, they will reflect on how a true professional behaves and conducts himself and align themselves accordingly. Darryl would enjoy knowing he didn't die in vain. My prayers to his wife, son and daughter and granddaughter....what a fine man he was and he loved you all so much--he talked of you so often. RIP, Darryl I will always miss you and think of you fondly. You're not 10-7, you're just 10-8 in a new troop!

Grateful Civilian

I remember the first day I met Darryl in a u-turn on I-95 four years ago.We both had NY law enforcement in common and shared old war stories. We crossed paths many times after that, especially when one of us had a car stopped on the interstate. Darryl would never pass you by without offering to help. Darryl, may you rest in peace brother. I will never forget you. God bless you and your family. Gone, but NEVER forgotten. JP
