We worked with Det. Haywood as "rookies" in 1981 in Manhattan North's NSU 4.
Darryl was always a professional. Throughout his years with the NYPD, he served with honor. Our hearts are broken at this great loss.
With sincerest sympathy to his family. Darryl is a true hero. God Bless.

On Behalf of myself, and the Family of Police Officer Daniel Starks (Ft Myers Fl, E/O/W 10-25-03) we want you to know that you are all in our prayers! The Lord will sustain you as you go through this difficult, and trying time, but just remember your loved one is being cared for in Heaven, and is now eternally safe. We hope that you all remain as strong as possible, and know that we are all thinking of you. No words are quite ever adequate, but Police Officers make the ultimate sacrifice everyday, and our hope, and prayer is that they will always be remembered for their heroic efforts, and kind hearts.

I never dreamed it would be me,
My name for all eternity,
Recorded here at this hallowed place
Alas, my name, no more my face.

"In the line of duty, " I hear them say:
My family now the price to pay.
My folded flag stained with their tears;
We only had those few short years.
The badge no longer on my chest,
I sleep now in eternal rest.
My sword I pass to those behind,
And pray they keep this thought in mind.

I never dreamed it would be me,
And with heavy heart and bended knee,
I ask for all here from the past:
Dear God, let my name be the last.

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children OF GOD.

A MESSAGE TO GOD: THANK YOU for sharing the blessing of Trooper Haywood with us ... even those of us who never had the blessing of meeting him. We thank Trooper Haywood's family for their sacrifice; for decades of his long shift hours, time away from his family and those he loved for the service of the community who needed him, for all of the frigid nights on duty for N.Y.P.D., and for every encounter with the lesser of the human element that may have left him sad inside, he still rose to the occaision and gave his all.

The community at large generally does not see this aspect, and therefore does not share the appreciation that we in law enforcement (or in some way connected with law enforcement) do. That in itself is sad, however we do not dwell on it, and continue our service to the community. Trooper Haywood appeared to be a gleaming example to all who knew him, and a gleaming example to the next generation; That they might grow to emulate such a dedicated, compassionate man, who gave everything to the community, no matter what community he served. THANK YOU, THE FAMILY OF TROOPER HAYWOOD.

My fiance, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis was a Deputy Sheriff with the Davis County Sheriff's Office in southeast Iowa. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Darryl did. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Darryl be the last to die this way.

Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Trooper Haywood's family, friends, and co-workers must be feeling. My heart goes out to you all, especially to his wife. No one can truly understand the pain of our loss until they've walked in our shoes. I wish I could give you a few words of wisdom to help you through this tough time, but there isn't anything I can really say or do to make the situation better. Just know that my thoughts are with you.

Please accept my condolences on behalf of the McElderry family and remember that Darryl is part of huge law enforcement family. If you ever need anything any number of them will be there for you (as I've quickly found out!) From reading the many reflections posted here, I am certain Darryl was well respected and well loved.

Thank you Trooper Haywood for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please say "hello" to my fiance Dennis for me.

Peace, Love, Luck, and Happiness!

I am a State Trooper with the Florida Highway Patrol assigned to the county in which Trooper Haywood lived. I reside in the county in which Trooper Haywood patrolled.
Our paths would cross from time to time. It never failed, I would be on a traffic stop while Haywood was either heading to the house or heading to work in Volusia. Always, always- not matter what Haywood would stop just to make sure things were ok or if I needed any assistance. He was a cool cat, you know smooooth. It was a pleasure to have known him.
Rest now my brother- I know you'll be patrolling the streets of heaven.
To the family, my thoughts and prayers are with you.

I had the pleasure of going to elementary school with Darryl and his brother. We also started our duty together with the NYPD along with my brother, Sgt. Miguel Mora, and what would be Darryl's future wife, Linda. He was always a gentleman and never had a bad word about anyone.

We also both did 4 years of duty together with the NYPD Highway Patrol/Motorcycle #1, which covered Manhattan and The Bronx. Eventually he went to do bodyguard duty with then Commssioner Benjamin Ward (Car #1), and I went to do bodyguard/chauffeur duty with Chief of Detectives, Robert Colangelo (card #4).

Darryl, my brother, Linda and myself all retired from the NYPD and moved to the state of Florida. Darryl joined the Florida Highway Patrol as a Tropper and I joined the Orange County Sheriff's Office as a Deputy Sheriff. We always seemed to meet during our careers, and Darryl always brought a smile.

Darryl, Rest In Peace. You will be missed.
