A true hero. A man who knew what needed to be done and without regard to possible consequences did it!

He didn't waiver, he didn't falter, he engaged. He engaged an active shooter and saved others from harm.

Thank you Paul for your dedication to the Martinez Community and your ultimate act of bravery.

My heart goes out to you all. I know it is such a painful time. I remember my heart hurt and was in so much pain. Such a loss, I am so sorry that one more family has to go through the loss of a husband and daddy, a hero and protector who put the safety of other lives above his own. May God be with you all.

I'm very sorry for your loss. Sgt. Starzyck gave his life to protect another; while you mourn his loss, remember that he died doing what he loved to do. The only words that come to mind right now are that of Abraham Lincoln, "I pray that our heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom."

I remember Paul when I first started out as a Cadet for Martinez, He was the guy who always would stop and say "hi" with a smile, no matter who you were. I remember days at the PD, when the world just seemed to be hanging over me, I was still new to the realm of a paid job with Martinez, and sometimes you could just see the stress on my face. Paul would see me in that way, stop his paper work, and just talk to me; we would relax in WC's office, and go on about nothing. That meant a lot to me, Paul always helped me when I needed it, even though he really didn't have to help me in any way. Sgt Paul Starzyck was a great man, officer, mentor, and friend, and he will always be missed by my family and I. "Count thee among thy Saints..." rest in peace my friend.
