Nick knew that he wanted to be a cop since he was a teenager. He wasn't a cocky cop wanna be. He was a hard worker and ready and willing to help out in any task...large or small. Thanks for keeping us safe out there.

I am so sorry for your lost. Nick was a great guy. I will miss him. I remember in our senior year how much fun we had. When I had a problem I could always go to him and he always knew the right thing to say. He made me hang in there even know I wanted to give up. I remember him going into his mothers classroom and just having one on ones with her. In high school he was always doing something (I really didn't know how he found the time). You guys raised a great son and I am proud to have known! My thoughts and prayers are with you and his son.

I remember my first thought when my phone rang so early this morning being "oh god, who got shot". Then when I saw the caller was a fellow brother my heart sank and I knew. Still I wanted to deny the possibility and just asked who had been hurt, I couldn't bring myself to ask anything more. No last name was needed, just hearing your first name spoken was enough for me to know that my card buddy, a friend was gone, that you had paid the ultimate sacrifice. Putting on my uniform was never as hard as it was this morning, but I knew that you were giving all of us strength to carry out our duty and commitment to the community and to one another during this time. As hard as it was I felt great pride in putting on the same uniform that you always took such pride in wearing.

Already you are greatly missed but I am forever grateful for the laughs and times that we shared. The last time we joked with one another over cards will forever be burned in my mind as will the last call I was on with you. Both happening only days ago. Rest now brother you have earned it, we will continue the watch from here.

A YEAR AND A DAY

Just a year and a day
After the tragedy
Another officer
lies dead in the street

Nick Polizzotto
a veteran of nine years
Will now be the recipient
Of prayers and tears

His family to live
with his memory alone
The sense of loss now
so close to home

The officers just left
the vigil for Scott
An emergency call
a gun has been shot

Nick and his partner
arrive at the scene
Nick the veteran
his partner a bit green

A call through the air
exclaimed 'Officer down'
They rushed to the scene
On the street he was found

EMS called his name
Can you hear me, open your eyes
But their training wasn't enough
At the hospital, he died

Our thoughts and prayers
to his entire family
He will remain, like Scott
in our memory

I have just been informed of Cpl. Polizzotto's death by a friend with Southbend P.D. I am very saddened to hear this news and I wish to express my deepest sympathy to all who knew or was affected by this officer. I have been out of law enforcement for 10 years and it still makes me tear up to hear this kind of news. I have put a candle on my porch this evening as well and I hope Nick can see it.

As an Officer serving in the Military I equate the Police as a brother in arms defending the innocent and protecting freedom. While we send our Military warriors overseas, you remain here just as dedicated in your service to our families on the home-front. Just as with the death of a soldier, the world and the United States are less safe, without you, the cities and America are less safe. Tonight, I will seep less soundly, less peacefully in your absence. I'm sure that when God received you, He said, "Well done, Nick, well done!" God bless your family and those left behind to carry on.

I would like to extend my condolences to the family of this hero. I did not know this officer personally, but just the same, it brings tears to my eyes to know that we have lost another one of our protectors. I hope that somehow his family can find a way to make some sense out of this and move on, as I am sure that is what he would have wanted. And as a symbol of my sadness, I will tie a black ribbon around my antenna, just as I did when Scott Severns was killed. I know that may not be much, but maybe it will remind people I pass by that police officers deserve respect. God Bless and Be With You Always.
