Officer Ron Jones was shot and killed while attempting to serve a drug warrant on Mary Street with other officers.

Officer Jones entered the rear door of a residence and was shot as he made entrance to a bedroom where the shooter was in. The shot struck him in the abdomen below his vest. He succumbed to his wounds while being transported to a local hospital in a patrol car.

It was later determined that the subject named on the search warrant lived on the other half of the duplex that the officers entered.

The man who shot Officer Jones was apprehended at the scene and charged with capital murder. He was found guilty of capital murder on January 23, 2004, and sentenced to death. The death sentence was later reduced to life without parole. In 2011 the sentence was further reduced to 10 years, including time served, following a second trial in which he plead guilty to manslaughter.

Officer Jones had served with the five-officer Prentiss Police Department for five years. His father was chief of police at the time of the shooting. He is survived by his parents and two brothers.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the tenth anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.

I pray for solace for all those who love and remember you for I know both the pain and pride are forever. I hold your family in my heart's embrace today. I share your parents' anquish of losing a beloved child which surely has to be life's greatest sorrow.

I am also pained to learn that the justice that was given in the first sentence has been snatched away from you. This was a travesty of justice.
