A PART OF AMERICA DIED

Somebody killed a policeman today
And a part of America died...
A piece of our country he swore to protect
Will be buried with him at his side.
The beat that he walked was a battlefield, too,
Just as if he had gone off to war;
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half-mast
To his name they will add a gold star.
The suspect that shot him will stand up in court
With counsel demanding his rights,
While a young, widowed mother must work for her kids
And spend many long, lonely nights.
Yes, somebody killed a policeman today...
Maybe in your town or mine,
While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors A cop put his life on the line.
Now his ghost walks the beat on a dark city street,
And he stands at each new rookie's side:
He answered the call . . . of himself he gave his all,
And a part of America died...

My condolences to the Lasso family and the Freemansburg Police Department. It is never easy to learn that a fellow police officer has been killed in the line of duty. It is especially hard to comprehend when the you personally know the officer. I knew Bob as a fellow officer and friend for several years. Whether backing him up on a traffic stop or working a DUI checkpoint Bob was always a pleasure to be around. He was a great officer and I'm sure a great father and husband. Bob will be missed by his family and law enforcement brothers and sisters. There will be tough times ahead but as always we will continue doing our jobs and protecting the communities we work in.

Bob, you will be missed and never forgotten. You have served with honor and dignity. Rest in peace my brother.

Robert always had a smile that could change your attitude for the whole day. I saw him immediately before he went responding to his final call, and once again, that awesome smile. Having known Robert over ten years, one thing is for sure, he would do anything for anyone. Robert, thank you for your service, and know we are praying for your family. God bless the Lasso family
