Reflections for Police Officer Charles Richard Thomas Haist

Officer Haist,
I had not yet had the chance of meeting you. As a resident of Henry County I felt safe in my home with you on the watch, I thank you for that. As a fellow police officer you were my brother, no questions asked! My wife did have the chance of meeting you at the QT on 138, before or just as you were comming onto shift a few times as she was on her way home from work. There is nothing we can say that hasn't already been said about your selflessness, honor, and loyality to the job. You are in a wonder place now, rest easy we now have the watch. My thoughts and prayers now go out to our fellow brothers in blue who will grieve for our loss. Say hey to Chris for me.

Hello darkness, my old friend,
I’ve come to talk with you again,
Because a vision softly creeping,
Left it’s seeds while I was sleeping,
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence.

In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone,
’neath the halo of a street lamp,
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of
A neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence.

And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more.
People talking without speaking,
People hearing without listening,
People writing songs that voices never share
And no one deared
Disturb the sound of silence.

Fools said i,you do not know
Silence like a cancer grows.
Hear my words that I might teach you,
Take my arms that I might reach you.
But my words like silent raindrops fell,
And echoed
In the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon God they made.
And the sign flashed out it’s warning,
In the words that it was forming.
And the signs said, the words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls.
And whisper’d in the sounds of silence.

May your family know their are many others who feel the loss as well. While many take for granted the efforts and sacrifices of the men and women in blue, it is their "every hour every day" service that allows us to rest our eyes at night. May your daughters remember you proudly.

A PIECE OF AMERICA DIED
Somebody killed a Policeman today
and a piece of America died
A piece of our country he swore to protect
will be buried with him... at his side
The suspect who shot him will stand up in court
with counsel demanding his rights
while a young widowed mother must work for her kids
and spend many long, lonely nights
The beat that he walked was a battlefield too
just as if he had gone off to war
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half staff
to his name they will add a gold star
Yes, somebody killed a Policeman today
It happened in your town or mine
While we slept in comfort, behind our locked doors
a Cop laid his life on the line
Now his ghost walks the beat on a dark city street
and he stands at each new rookie's side
He answered the call, and gave us his all
and a piece of America died

For the fellow L.E. brothers, sisters, & family members of Officer Chuck Haist, Please know that although I did not know Chuck that well he always seemed to have a smile on his face. I know he worked hard (two & more extra duty jobs) and wanted to do the best for his family, community and department. He will be yet another fine officer that we all will miss. Now that his tour of duty as ended here on Earth and he has gone on to a far better place, the rest of us will continue to serve and perform our duties to/for the Glory of God. I pray for God’s comfort to fill this void you each have.

It is during times like this that we all realize we need help from some one who is bigger than we are. It is our prayer that the family, friends and fellow officers will find the help they need to deal with the death of officer Charles Haist. May God grant that help.
