Reflections for Police Officer Charles Richard Thomas Haist

Chuckie,
This is the first time I have submitted anything for your memorial page because it still does not seem real that you have went on to heaven. I have thought many times what I would write and each time it is different. Today my thoughts are on the birthday party tomorrow. I look forward to seeing the family, but the reality of what happened hurts even more when we gather. Everyone misses you so much. Even family that does not live real close is trying to stay in better contact and deal with the pain of losing a police officer and family member.
Even before your death, Jonathan and I talked about how you loved being a police officer. I will never forget the first time you said that now you were more than cousins because now you were brothers too. The officers at HCPD were so helpful and supportive the week of the funeral. It is obvious why you would want to work with such great people. The community was awesome too. During the processional people walked out of their houses and other businesses to salute you. The cars on the road were stopped and people got out of their cars to show respect as we passed. I hope you were able to watch from heaven; it was something else.

My sincere condolences to all the loved ones of Officer Haist. I know he is loved and missed by so many.

Dear Rachel,
Your heart is broken, I know. I understand your pain all too well. I lost my precious Josh almost a year ago this May. There are no words that can take away the pain. Only the Lord can fill the void that you are left with. Rest in your love for Chuck and the memories you shared together. Hold him close to your heart....he will always be with you. I feel Josh with me every day...Chuck will be with you too. Again, I know and understand your pain. You are not alone in this, and I am here for you whenever you need me. You are in my prayers.

God bless,
Kelly

I am so saddened to see an officer from my hometown listed here. Although I did not know Officer Haist, I do know that the men and women of HCPD are committed to caring for and protecting their communities. His sacrfice is evidence of that commitment. I will never forget the way this department supported me in my loss. I support yours now in prayer.

A month ago today, you were taken from us in a sudden and tradgic way.

A month with no phone calls, no visits, no smile on your face; with an emptiness in our hearts that can never be erased.

A month with pain, grief, and sorrow; knowing with you, we have no tomorrows.

A month has gone and the pain is still so strong; they say that time heals all. Really? How long?

A month ago we were told to say good-bye; I just can't seem to do it, no matter how hard I try.

I know that you would not want to be the one to cause us so much pain; and I try to remember that, although it is in vain.

If you could, you would tell us to remember you with a smile; We all want to, but it will be awhile.

Right now the pain is still so new, that to miss you with grief is all we know how to do.

We will love and miss you forever; no one could take your place in our hearts, no, Never!

Rest in Peace Sweet Chuckie, and we all look forward to the day that we are reunited with you in heaven. We know you have gone ahead to "pave the way".

rachel,

please, please feel free to contact me should ever need anything at all or just want to talk. roger parker, the GA COPS chapter president, has all of my contact info. i lost my fiancee, cole, almost 2 years ago now. i understand your pain unfortunately all too well. i can't send you any words of advice or tell you what to do to ease the pain and heartache. take each moment as it comes. that is all you can do. make it through each moment, and then soon enough it will be the next day. as i said, please do not hesitate to contact me anytime. i will be praying for you and all of chuck's family and friends. nothing will ever replace him, but one thing that can't be taken away is the love and memories you shared.

It has been 1 month and I still can not express what this feels like physically and emotionally to not have you by my side. I can remember the day we met like it was yesterday. You and I laughed at nothing for about 1 hour in my office before we even asked eachother our names. I try to keep that feeling with me even though you are not but it is very hard. We will all try to follow in your positive footsteps but it is not as easy as you made it out to be! You will always be my soulmate and I will always be your "boogies". Dakota and Buckwheat miss you too!!! Love you, Bye

As a Christian brother, I thank Chuck for carrying the torch of His love so valiantly.
As a friend, I feel like I am dying inside knowing that I won't get to see your smile again or hear that "Chuck"le you were so famous for.

My fiancé, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis was a Deputy Sheriff with the Davis County Sheriff's Office in southeast Iowa. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Chuck did. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Chuck be the last to die this way.

Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Officer Haist's family, friends, and co-workers must be feeling. My heart goes out to you all, especially to his wife. No one can truly understand the pain of our loss until they've walked in our shoes. I wish I could give you a few words of wisdom to help you through this tough time, but there isn't anything I can really say or do to make the situation better. Just know that my thoughts are with you.

Please accept my condolences on behalf of the McElderry family and remember that Chuck is part of huge law enforcement family. If you ever need anything any number of them will be there for you (as I've quickly found out!) From reading the many reflections posted here, I am certain Chuck was well respected and well loved. Chuck sounds like an amazing man. You were blessed to have had him in your life, even for a short time.

Thank you Officer Haist for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please say "hello" to my fiancé Dennis for me.

Wishing you brighter and better days,

Jocelyne :)
