Patrolman Louis Metaxas died after falling from a roof during a search for a burglary suspect at 55 Old Colony Avenue.

A citizen who was also looking for the suspect had also taken his German Shepherd to the roof while Patrolman Metaxas was there. The dog attempted to attack Patrolman Metaxas, knocking him from the room.

Patrolman Metaxas had served with the Boston Police Department for nine years.

I pass by the corner where the plaque commemorating Officer Metaxas has been placed. I take a moment whenever the red light forces me to wait to remember those who served and died in the line of duty.

My job doesn't require me to face that prospect on a daily basis. Thank you to those of you who have the courage to do so.
