Sheriff Lynch succumbed to gunshot wound sustained almost two months earlier when he was shot by a suspect who was wanted for the murder of Detective William Hulligan, of the Cleveland, Ohio, Police Department, February 6, 1877. The suspect was also mortally wounded in the shootout.
