Federal Prohibition Agent Thomas Lankford was shot and killed while conducting an investigation in Springfield, Illinois.

Agent Lankford had been left to guard a still in the early morning hours as agents continued raids at other locations. Unaware that their still had been raided, a car that contained liquor appeared. As Agent Lankford questioned the driver he was shot and mortally wounded.

When other agents returned to the scene they took him to a hospital where he died the following day.

Thomas Bright Lankford was the identical twin brother of my grand father, Greene “Wright” Lankford Sr.. They were born in 1901. Thomas Bright Lankford also had a brother named Robert. As a child my father told me stories that he had heard from his father about "Uncle Thomas Bright getting shot while guarding the moonshine still". My grand father became a court reporter shortly after his brother's death and I've often wondered if sitting through the trial of his brothers murderer had anything to do with it. Our family is proud of his service and we bare no grudge for his sacrifice; he is now resting in the company of fine men!
