Deputy Kalkes and Deputy Richard Lura were killed when their patrol car was struck by a train as they responded to a call. The collision occurred at the Zemble Street crossing in Chaska, Minnesota.
Deputy Kalkes had been with the agency for three years and was survived by his father and sister.

My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
