Deputy Commissioner Claude Swackhammer and Sergeant Robert Lee Bittick of the Alaska State Troopers, were killed in an airplane accident. While flying the department's Grummen Goose seaplane from Anchorage to Juneau, Commissioner Swackhammer became caught in a snowstorm in British Columbia and crashed into the side of a mountain due to zero visibility. He died instantly.

Deputy Commissioner Swackhammer had served with the Alaska State Troopers for 25 years and had been appointed by the governor to the Alaska Department of Public Safety. He is survived by his wife, two sons, and daughter.

"Swack" was the best supervisor I worked for. A nice guy and a charismatic leader. Cindy and Alaska lost a man of great character when that airplane crashed.
