Deputy Jernigan was shot and killed while responding to a disturbance at a convenience store. When he arrived at the scene he was shot with a .30-.30 rifle and killed.

One of the suspects was convicted of capital murder but had the sentence commuted to life. The second suspect was acquitted of capital murder.

Deputy Jernigan was survived by his wife and two sons.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 36th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace

I pray for solace for all those who love and miss you for I know both the pain and pride are forever.
