Patrolman Holmes was stuck by a vehicle and killed while directing traffic at the corner of Main Street and Gayoso Street. Officer Holmes motioned a large truck through the intersection. The truck was attempting a wide angle turn and had to go very slow. While the truck was turning, Patrolman Holmes noticed a pedestrian who was unable to cross the street because of cars making right turns. Patrolman Holmes raised his hand to stop traffic and his sleeve caught on the bed of the turing truck. He was pulled under the wheels of the truck and killed.
