Officer Garcia was shot and killed in a shootout with a robbery suspect. Officer Garcia had chased the man into a subway station and exchanged shots with the man at the end of the subway platform. Although mortally wounded, Officer Garcia was able to return fire and kill the suspect.

Officer Garcia was assigned to the 6th Precinct. He was survived by his wife.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 35th anniversary year of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.
