Deputy Escamilla was shot and killed after he attempted to shop a bartender from beating a man. The bartender had ordered the man out of the bar, but before the man could leave the bartender attacked him. Deputy Escamilla, who was off-duty, attempted to intervene and was shot and killed by the bartender. The bartender was also killed in the exchange of gunfire.
Deputy Escamilla was survived by his two children.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 57th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.
