Your daughter, my grandmother, was 11 years old when you died. I believe, because she was so young when you died, she missed you all of her life. Each year we would go to Highland Cemetery on Memorial Day to decorate your grave. Your grave had a marker that showed that you served in the Union Army. That marker has since been stolen. My grandmother loved you very much and would be very proud that you are recognized for your service to the citizens of Great Falls and Cascade County as Cascade County's first sheriff and as Town Marshall in the late 1880s. I have only read about some of your early law enforcement work. Thank you for your remembrance of C.P. Downing as a citizen of Great Falls first, a builder of some of Great Falls early buildings, and, most of all, as a law enforcement officer who performed honorably enough to be recognized as a peace officer killed in the line of duty.
