Police Officer Paul Heidelberger was shot and killed while attempting to break up a fight in front of a bar at the intersection of Bell Boulevard and 39th Avenue in the Bayside section.

A bouncer at a neighboring bar opened fire on the group as Officer Heidelberger attempted to break up the fight, striking him and two other men. The bouncer then walked over and shot Officer Heidelberger and the other man in the head, killing them.

The suspect fled the scene but was arrested several days later. He was convicted of one count of second degree murder and once count of second degree manslaughter and sentenced to 30 years to life. He will be eligible for parole in 2022.

Officer Heidelberger, today marks the 24th year since your senseless death. Part of me believes that the man who killed you felt he was doing the right thing (at first) in his twisted way, but to shoot you and the other man in the head only shows that he was not simply a complete moron, but a dangerous lunatic. I pray to GOD he never sees the light of freedom as long as he lives.

You did your best to help others and you did it in the name of the NYC Housing Police, an agency that was destroyed in the name of fiscal responsibility. Your agency is simply a part of history and you are a part of the history of the New York City Housing Authority Police and a lost Brother.

God Bless and may your eternal rest be ever peaceful.
