Patrolman James Bush was stuck and killed by a vehicle being operated by an intoxicated driver. Patrolman Bush was directing traffic at the scene of an accident on South Third Street when the he was struck. The suspect was arrested at the scene and charged with vehicular homicide, driving while intoxicated and reckless driving.

This incident lead to the Memphis Police Department issuing reflective vests to every officer.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 33rd anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Your memory will always be honored and revered as time never diminishes respect. The lessons of your death may have saved fellow officers' lives by making reflective vesta available.
