Officer Burgess was shot and killed as he attempted to arrest a man for disorderly conduct in a drug store.

Officer Robert Burgess was fatally shot at Sattler’s Drugs Store on William Street by a suspect who had gained control of another officers’ revolver in a struggle and fired six shots, one striking Officer Burgess in the chest.

The suspect was convicted of manslaughter and attempted murder and sentenced to 8 to 30 years. He was paroled September 19, 1989.

To fully appreciate the heroes of the present, we must recognize our heroes of the past. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 35th anniversary year of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace
