Deputy Marshal Bud Carlson succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained in a shootout with two prisoners during an escape attempt in Superior, Wisconsin, on August 13, 1985.
He and another deputy marshal were transferring the suspected bank robbers between two prisons when the incident occurred. Both deputy marshals were shot and seriously wounded. One of the suspects was wounded and arrested a short distance away. The second suspect was able to escape but was arrested in Illinois later in the day.
Deputy Marshal Carlson was a US Navy veteran of WWII. He had retired from the St. Louis Park Police Department in Minnesota before joining the United States Marshals Service.
