Patrolman Richard Nash was shot and killed by a probationary patrolman who was attempting to show off in front of two friends. The three men were driving between bars when Patrolman Nash, who had just gotten off duty, cut in front of their car while driving home.
The three, not knowing Patrolman Nash as a police officer, then followed Patrolman Nash into an alley behind his home and started to argue with him. When one of the men told Patrolman Nash to put his arms up a shootout ensued in with Patrolman Nash was shot. Despite being mortally wounded, he was able to return fire and shot all three men, one of them fatally.
Both of the suspects who survived were charged with murder, but subsequently acquitted. The probationary policeman was fired from the force.
Patrolman Nash had served with the agency for 12 years. He was survived by his wife and three children.
