Officer John Bohach was shot and killed with a high-powered rifle while he was assisting other officers in setting up a perimeter outside a house following a pursuit.
An officer had stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation. The suspect suddenly sped away and was pursued by another officer to the location where the man ran into the home. As Officer Bohach assisted in securing the area, the suspect shot him in the chest. Officer Bohach was not wearing a vest at the time. The suspect was apprehended later in the afternoon after a SWAT team stormed the house.

The 49-year-old man was sentenced to two consecutive life terms. He died in prison on October 6, 2013.

Officer Bohach had been employed with the Reno Police Department for 13 years, and is survived by his wife and two daughters.

I was in the Academy, working for Lyon County S.O., at the time you were called to walk in Heaven. We attended your funeral and I still remember the words today. I have taken those words to heart and tell your story to tell my recruits.

I can still hear the story of your daughter talking on her play phone on the day you were taken from us. I tear up still to this day. I am so glad to see you daughters are growing up with so much happiness. Now one is married, wow!. You must be so proud.

May Peace and Happiness forever grace your family.
