Deputy Theriot was killed during a foot chase of a 19-year-old suspect wanted for various counts of assault and battery. During the chase he ran into a wooded area and contact was lost. The suspect turned himself in approximately three hours later and stated that Deputy Theriot had fallen into a bayou (river) during the chase. The suspect then watched as Deputy Theriot struggled for his life and eventually drowned. His body was found in a bayou near Dulac, Louisiana.
The suspect was convicted of first degree murder in connection with Deputy Theriot's death and sentenced to life in prison.
Deputy Theriot is survived by his wife and two children.
