Chief Zwiers was struck and killed by a vehicle while directing traffic for a funeral procession on Highway 67. He had stopped northbound traffic when a truck failed to stop and struck him. The driver was driving on a cancelled license. He was sentenced to 30 days in jail.
Chief Zwiers had been with the agency for seven years. He was killed three days before his 65th birthday.

My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
