Special Agent Ray Sutton disappeared while conducting an investigation in Clayton, New Mexico. His government vehicle was located in a canyon 20 miles from where the suspects were last seen. When one of the suspects was later arrested in Colorado he was in possession of Agent Sutton's government identification.

It is presumed that Agent Sutton was murdered near Raton, New Mexico, but his body was never located.

A suspect was arrested after being found in possession of Special Agent Sutton's check after he attempted to forge a government check issued to Agent Sutton. The man was acquitted at trial when the only witness changed his testimony after being threatened by bootleggers.

Agent Sutton, there is no marker to visit, no grave that holds you for eternity and there was never any closure for your family and co-workers, but you have never been forgotten and are memorialized here on this wonderful site as well as other law enforcement venues.

On this 78th anniversary of your disappearance and presumed murder, we honor you and all those courageous agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives who tragically make up the second longest list of fallen heroes on this site and who put their lives on the line every day in a job that is often under appreciated.

God Bless and may you continue to Rest in Peace, Brother.
