Patrolman Read was shot and killed while responding to assist other officers as a prisoner attempted to escape from the police department. The prisoner shot Patrolman Read with a shotgun he had gained control of at the police station. The suspect was shot and killed by a dispatcher moments later.

Patrolman Read was survived by his wife and two children.

Norman is my Grandfather. He was killed in the line of duty when my Dad was 16 or 17, so I never got to meet him. I heard about him from my Dad before my Dad died. He was a very handsome man. I saw pictures. I would love to talk to anyone who knew him.
