Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Shane Thomas Detwiler

Although I did not know him long the time he did work here at the gate, he was very nice. I am very sure he will be missed by everyone. His family will be in all of our prayers.

"The Eyes of a Man"

If you ever can look into the eyes of a man dressed in blue,
It will make you wonder why he protects me and you.

He suffers from lack of sleep, the red eyes will tell,
Even missing a meal or two to keep us all well.

Years of tears sometimes built up inside,
From what he has seen, but thinks he hides.

Look a little deeper in his eyes and you could even see,
How he felt all the years he has protected you and me.

For all the times people have been rude to him,
For pulling them over, while out with their friends.

For the little girl he saved from a burning car,
While others just watched him from afar.

Not to mention, the bank robber he caught last week,
People never talk to him unless it’s his help they seek.

For the drugs he has confiscated over time,
The people, he has saved comes to his mind.

The times he wonders at the end of the day,
Is it worth all this pain, for such little pay?

But, don’t look unless you are willing to see,
He is a human being just like you and me.

He wears his uniform, gun and a badge on his chest,
Doesn’t make him perfect just a grade above the rest.

For if you look real hard you will also see,
A man who you respect is who he longs to be.

My family and I are greatly saddened by the loss of your husband and father. He gave the supreme sacrifice for those in Chambers County not to mention the sacrifce you and your family have made while he was serving in the armed forces as well as each day he went to work to "Protect and to Serve". You will be forever in our prayers and thoughts. I pray that God gives you and your family peace and comfort at this time in your walk. Your children will always know just how much their father was appreciated for the service he gave to not only the County but to the nation. May God give you strength each and every day to face the future.

God be with you,

The Final Inspection

The warrior stood and faced God,
Which will always come to pass,
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.

“Step forward now, old warrior,
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?”

The warrior squared his shoulders and
Said, “No, Lord, I guess I ain’t,
‘Cause those of us who carry guns
Can’t always be saint.

“I’ve had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was tough,
And sometimes I’ve been violent,
‘Cause the world is awfully rough.

“But, I never took a penny
That wasn’t mine to keep.
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep,

“And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear,
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I’ve wept unmanly tears.

“I know I don’t deserve a place
Among the people here,
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fears.

“If you’ve a place for me here, Lord,
It needn’t be so grand. In life
I didn’t expect nor need too much,
So if you don’t, I’ll understand.”

There was a silence all around the throne,
Where the saints had often trod,
As the warrior stood quietly.
For the judgment of his God.

“Step forward now, my warrior,
You’ve born your burdens well,
Walk peacefully on Heaven’s streets,
You’ve done your time in Hell.”

To the family, friends, and co-workers of Deputy Detwiler:
Our thoughts and prayers are with each and every one of you. It was four years ago today that my son and I lost Roy in the line of duty. It is extremely hard to go on but somehow you do. Time will go by so fast in some ways and so slow in others. Be proud of your husband/father for what he did and how he served his country. I'm sure that he was an exceptional husband, father, son, brother, co-worker and friend. May God Bless all of you.
To Deputy Detwiler: God Speed My Friend. You are, and will always be, a hero for giving the ultimate sacrifice.
