Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Shane Thomas Detwiler

It will be my honor to ride in memory of Deputy Detwiler, a true hero and fallen brother in the inaugural ride of Law Enforcement United's Road to Hope.

Virginia Beach Police Department

"The Final Inspection"
The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"
The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.
There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

I attended the 49th game warden academy with Shane, and he was a phenomenal student and athlete. He achieved the number one ranking for academics and was very close to the top athletically. This feat was outstanding since there were 40 cadets in the 49th academy.

I am deeply saddened by the loss of such a fine professional, a loving husband, father, and dedicated public servant. Shane will forever hold a place in my heart, and he shall never be forgotten. May the Lord watch over his family; provide guidance and strength for the years to come. I pray his wife and children will remember Shane as a true warrior who gave his life in service, and it was not in vain.

The law enforcement community was pierced yet again by a senseless act of violence towards a courageous sheepdog who took an oath to protect and serve.

With love, honor, and treasured memories,

Officer Matt Kilpatrick (ex TPWD Game Warden) #1397

For eight years I've worn an aluminum bracelet honoring the police officers and firefighters that lost their lives on 9/11. Today I ordered a bracelet honoring you, brother. I was there that fateful Monday, and I've prayed for your family everyday since.

Our family's prayers go out to all that knew and loved Shane. Our thoughts are especially with Trish, Audie, Aiden, and Abigail.

I tried to find a way for me to show my respects in my own way. These are the words that came to me. ~ Liz

The pounding of the pavement,
Now silent of your feet.
Your family of brothers and sisters in blue,
Now achingly incomplete.

The streets you once patrolled,
Are now less one more protector.
As those left behind watched the awful story unfold,
You took stance in front of the final inspector.

No more pain or sorrow,
Patrolling the streets of gold.
Here there is struggle with tomorrow,
Not having you to hold.

Babes you once held in your loving embrace,
Will forever be surrounded by your love.
Though you may not in body occupy this place,
Your spirit remains as you watch from above.

A heart that pumped red, white, and blue,
Brought still far too soon.
Mourners by the thousands fill pews,
Encompassed by the melancholy bagpipe and bugle tunes.

Flags flown high,
Streets lined deep,
Strangers cry,
Loved ones weep.

The volley signals it is time to resume the battle.
One final salute,
One last unanswered radio call.
Nary a dry eye,
Comrades standing tall,
To our fallen hero we say goodbye.

TO "ACHIEVE THE HONORABLE" YOU HAVE TO BE: IN THE ARENA "IT IS NOT THE CRITIC WHO COUNTS: NO THE MAN WHO POINTS OUT HOW THE STRONG MAN STUMBLES OR WHERE THE DOER OF DEEDS COULD HAVE DONE BETTER. THE CREDIT BELONGS TO THE MAN WHO IS ACTUALLY IN THE ARENA, WHOSE FACE IS MARRED BY DUST AND SWEAT AND BLOOD, WHO STRIVES VALIANTLY, WHO ERRS AND COMES UP SHORT AGAIN AND AGAIN, BECAUSE THERE IS NO EFFORT WITHOUT ERROR OR SHORTCOMING, BUT WHO KNOWS THE GREAT ENTHUSIASMS, THE GREAT DEVOTIONS, WHO SPENDS HIMSELF FOR A WORTHLY CAUSE; WHO, AT THE BEST, KNOWS, IN THE END, THE TRIUMPH OF HIGH ACHIEVEMENT, AND WHO, AT THE WORST, IF HE FAILS, AT LEAST HE FAILS WHILE DARING GREATLY, SO THAT HIS PLACE SHALL NEVER BE WITH THOSE COLD AND TIMID SOULS WHO KNEW NIETHER VICTORY NOR DEFEAT."

Shane was one of the nicest people I will have ever met. I can't think back on a single occasion where he talked bad about someone or even said an ugly word. He would just stand back and chuckle with that little grin on his face. It wasn't until after that fateful Monday that I became aware of his many accomplishments. It makes sense though, because he never boasted or bragged about anything. He was the utmost definition of humble. I am lucky to have known and worked with him. I am confident that through Shane's single life lossed, many many lives were saved. Thank you Shane. We love and miss you.
