Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Shane Thomas Detwiler

Most can not understand why we do this job, but I assure you that these reasons are never selfish. To have lived your life with courage, honor and in service of others, is a life well lived. To the family left behind, please find solace knowing your loved one has made a difference in this world and that you again will be together in paradise. Thank you my brother officer for your service and now, rest in peace.

I can't believe your gone. It was just a few months ago we were at the same training shareing a few laughs. When I herd the mid day news announcement about the shooting, I never would have guessed it was one of our guys. I don't want to diminish any part of the S.O. but you were one of us and always will be. I truely feel anger that we let such a good man leave. I hope that your family will find peace in knowing that you were a great man who answered his calling in every way. Rest in peace brother.

Dear family:

My husband's father is the utilities worker that called the police that day. Our family is greatly in debt to your family for Officer Detwiler's heroic actions. Officer Detwiler saved my father in law's life and who knows who else's. Your family will always be in our thoughts and prayers from this day forward. My husband is a police officer in Harris County and as the wife I want you to know that we are here for you. We can be contacted through COPS if you need anything.

AGAIN, WE WILL FOREVER THANK YOU FOR YOUR HUSBAND'S SACRIFICE THAT SAVED OUR FATHER'S LIFE.

God Bless you and keep you.

My thoughts and prayers are with Shane's family, friends, co-workers and community. What a great loss we all have to deal with. Shane's big smile and silly laugh will always be my "first thought" of him. I hope that each and every one of you who are grieving will find comfort in your own special memories of him. He loved God, his family, his job, and his country...what a great man to have known. We will miss him greatly.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.
