Randy,
My family knows first hand the nightmare your family is going through. My brother-in-law, Reading, PA PD Officer Scott A. Wertz was taken from us chasing an armed suspect on 8-6-2006. It still feels like yesterday.... You are a true hero and your sacrafice will never be forgotten. To your family, my deepest sympathies... lean on his brothers and sisters in blue for comfort. They will be there for you as we take care of our own!!! take some small measure of comfort knowing that he died doing something that he loved....
Rest easy Randy, we have the watch!!

May God comfort and protect your family and friends during this difficult time. 27 years of service is phenomenal and you will not be forgotten!! The bad guys may think they win when they take a warrior, but they only make the rest of us stronger and more determined to continue on and fight the good fight. They will NEVER win. My sincerest condolences to your family and fellow Officers. Your death is a tremendous loss not only to the LAPD but to your fellow citizens in the city of angels. I just finished reading an article about you on the Los Angeles Times website which detailed your strong faith in God and how deeply concerned you were with the youths of the inner city. So much so that you would visit them on your own time and mentor them and about your attempt at an NFL career after you graduated from college. The article further states that on your wedding day you cried tears of joy. Tonight the City of angels and the entire nation cries for your loss. Rest in peace fellow New Yorker.

Why do they always take the BEST ones? My husband woke me this morning with the devastating news. As we are friends with several on "D" Platoon, it hit hard & I cried at the loss of another brother in blue. I am sad that I never had the chance to meet Officer Simmons, but today I heard stories from those that knew him... stories of this wonderful devout Christian man who would do so much for his friends, his department, for church and for children. I look at your picture and I see a strong warrior, who wears his badge with pride! My entire life I've wanted to be an officer and for different reasons I haven't made it there yet. You'd think this would deter me, but it only makes me want it more! You are truly an inspiration and a hero. God Bless you Officer Simmons. I know that the Lord called you home because you were needed with Him. My deepest sympathies go out to your wife, children, friends & fellow officers in their time of grief. May the Lord look over them & give them comfort. My prayers are also with Officer Veenstra & his family...

Blood Upon the Shield

Confrontation in an alley. The Centurion does not yield.
But this time the good guy loses;
there is blood upon the shield.

And the mournful sounds of bagpipes
play out across the land,
drowned out by the sobs of a lonely young wife
and a child too young to understand.

While the killer pleads his case in court,
the thin blue line is one man short.
And we're one step closer to society's fall;
another cop's name is engraved on the wall.

Another state funeral, with an army in blue,
and we know it could've been me and it could've been you.
We all look ahead to what the future has in store,
front line troopers in a country that's at war.

At war with itself and at war with its cops and we're
out there every day 'cause the battle never stops.
It's not the way it is on TV shows or like
we learned in school; no cool music in the background,
no playing by the "rules;"

We're disillusioned warriors,
but for right we'll always strive.
We just pray that at the end of our stress-filled day
we'll get back home alive.

You stand out on the corner
ignoring the insults and the stares,
close to the point of believing that no one really cares,
when a six year-old boy walks over after watching
you for awhile, reaching out to shake your hand,
on his face a friendly smile.

To him you are a hero,
a protector of our land, and he wants
to learn about you,
as a cop and as a man.

And when he asks you why your badge is covered
by a black elastic band,
tell him about our Brother
A cop who made a stand.
