Todd: Your service will be remembered and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers this week.

To your classmates: I recall losing a troopmate and my thoughts will be with you as well. DPS members will, after visiting Austin and joining class A-2006 in their graduation, will always hold a place in my heart and that of my family.

To the family and friends of Trooper Todd Holmes: Just under a year ago (May 2, 2006), we lost one of my best friends and "little brother", Trooper Ed Chavez. The loss was devistating to all who knew and loved him. I can honestly say I know what you are going through.

The question "Why?" seems to be the one most often asked right after Ed died...as I'm sure it it happening now for you. It took me a while to realize it, but I had to return to my Faith and remember that only God knows why he takes his children in the manner that he chooses. I don't think any of us will truly understand the reasons and it is a futile effort to even try.

While I can do nothing to help ease the hurt you are feeling now, the one thing that I can do to console you is to tell you that time really does help to heal the wounds. While the hurt and emptiness are still there, even almost a year later, I don't feel it like I used to. My friends and I fondly tell "Ed" stories and laugh heartily as we think back about our friend. While the loss is still felt, it's not as heavy as it once was. I can only hope time will help you as is has us. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Todd...keep up the good work my friend. We'll be there as quick as we can.

To the Wife and Children of Trooper Holmes,
I was watching the news this morning with my son when I heard the story of what happened to your brave Husband and Father. I cannot express how sorry I am that your family must endure such pain. I remember it well. My dad was in the hospital for 2 weeks, but could not overcome his injuries. I pray for God to ease your pain with each passing day. Please know that you are not alone and that it is okay to reach out for help when you need it. You are in my prayers.

We offer our heartfelt sympathy to the family, friends and colleagues of Trooper Holmes and we honor his distinguished service to the cause of justice and peace. Sadly, our nation has lost one of its finest citizens, a community has lost a friend and protector, and a family has lost an example of character and courage who they will love and respect forever. Today, because of the sacrifice Trooper Holmes has made, the house of freedom is stronger, sturdier, and more secure.

To the family and friends of Trooper Holmes, I would like you to know that a lot of people pray for you, and my hope is that their prayers will give you the strength necessary to move on. Just as you were always with him when he walked the beat or patrolled the streets, know that he will always be with you - wherever you may be. In the days to follow, may you be strengthened by the fact that Trooper Holmes is a man distinguished by exceptional courage and will always be admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. You, your family and your sacrifice will never be forgotten.

To the family, friends, and officers that knew Trooper Holmes, my thoughts and prayers are with you as you face the trying times ahead of you. Please know your not alone.

Here I am, lost in the light of the moon that comes through my window
Bathed in blue, the walls of my memory divide the thorns from the roses
It's you and the roses

Touch me and I will follow in your afterglow
Heal me from all this sorrow
As I let you go I will find my way when I see your eyes
Now I'm living in your afterglow

Here I am, lost in the ashes of time, but who wants tomorrow?
In between the longing to hold you again
I'm caught in your shadow, I'm losing control
My mind drifts away, we only have today

Touch me and I will follow in your afterglow
Heal me from all this sorrow
As I let you go I will find my way
I will sacrifice 'til the blinding day when I see your eyes
Now I'm living in your afterglow

When the veils are gone as I let you go, as I let you go

Touch me and I will follow in your afterglow
Heal me from all this sorrow
As I let you go I will find my way, I will sacrifice
Now I'm living in your afterglow

Bathed in blue, the walls of my memory divide the thorns from the roses
It's you who is closest
