Officer Callemyn has made the ultimate sacrifice for his family, friends, and the citizens of this great city. It is during tough times like these that we must realize that we are all in this together, and with joined hands we can make this a better place. May God's grace continue to be with us all.

To the family and loved ones of Officer Charles J. Callemyn and his fellow officers with the Durham Police Department:

On behalf of our family, I want to extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Officer Callemyn was tragically killed in the line of duty. His valor and dedication will never be forgotten.

In reading the loving reflections left by family and friends, it is obvious that Charles was an amazing young man who touched many lives in a positive way. I can see that he is so loved and will be missed by so many.

The circumstances of his death were heart breaking and I know caused much anquish for all those affected. To his parents, I share your agony in losing a cherished child and know that the lives of everyone who called Charles beloved have been forever changed. To his wife and children, I pray that you find comfort in your faith, your family and friends
as you struggle with this devastating loss. May you be embraced by your law enforcement family and other police survivors who share this journey with you.

May Charles' spirit continue to soar and his memory continue to inspire. May God hold Charles, his wife and young children, and his other family members in the warmest part of his heart and the most gentle part of his soul.
Heaven has another hero today, but how I wish it were not your Charles.

I also salute Charles' patriotism to our country through his service in the Corps. My son Larry was Charles' brother in green as well as in blue. Larry was also a Durham native and we still have lots of family there. Larry, a Pittsburg, Ca police officer, was fatally shot during a foot pursuit in April of 2005. I am sure those two good old boys from Durham who wore the green and blue are watching over all of us today.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the distinquished service Charles gave to his community and the citizens of North Carolina, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on February 17, 2007.

Charles,

I am in absolute shock that you are really gone. I keep wanting to call your cell phone hoping it was just a cruel joke. You were unlike anyone else I had ever met. You always made those around you smile. You were a very brave person who put everyone else's needs about your own. You fought for the country you loved to defend our freedom overseas only to lose your life in East Durham. I know from talking to you that you loved your job and those who knew you knows you were the best. I enjoyed the ride along I did with you at Duke and it was alot of fun. I enjoyed visiting with you while you were on duty at the hospital. You were always so easy to talk to. I never knew that your birthday was the same day that Callie was born until this weekend. You were like a member of our family and you always will be. We will never forget you. After you left Duke for the city I felt comforted to know that you were patrolling the streets of Durham. I know you are watching over us now just like you always have. Life is better for having known you. You were an amazing person and we will always have the memories of our time with you. Thank you for your dedication and service to this country, to Durham, and for your friendship. Rest in Peace Charles. We love you.
