Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Police Officer Charles J. Callemyn

Each time I pass your grave I know the time is drawing near
We've lived without your smile for one cold and lonly year
This life has not been the same since that February day
Shedding tears and wondering why God took my friend away
I've knelt down many days alone beside that roadside grave
Reflecting on the lives you've touched and all the love you gave.
I wish I had just one more chance to see your shining face
And see you standing tall and strong in God's amazing grace
Until that day arrives when our friendship reunites
Please watch over and protect my life and keep me in your sights.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

It was an honor to work with you for the short time that I was in Durham. We frequently crossed paths when I was with DPD and you with Duke, it was usually you arriving on one of my traffic stops to make sure that everything was okay. I thank you for the dozens of times that you assisted me with calls for service. I continue to keep you and your family in my prayers. May God continue to bless your family.

I can't believe it's been six months. I think of you every day, and pray for your family and especially the boys. I miss our goofy conversations and chats at whatever weird hours you had available to call. And I especially miss the stories, such as the clothesline one mentioned in another post. I miss your giant heart and larger than life personality. I miss my friend.

Callemyn,
Until this day i still find it hard to believe that you have left us to go be w/ the man upstairs. You are greatly missed and Durham will never be the same without you. You were a true hero brother! One of the best memories I have of you is when I was working EMS one night and you were chasing some bad guy through a backyard and got clotheslined by a clothesline and you busted your lip.. that wasnt the funny part but when we got there, you were laughing and cutting jokes about it. Some of the funniest jokes ive ever heard! That was the last time we got to talk and joke around and i really miss you brother! Ill see you soon one day and I cant wait to catch up on things! Ill pray for your wife and kids. Take care man!

I haven't spent a lot of time this year reading the memorials of the fallen officers, mainly because it saddens me that so many great men and women have fallen. It's a terrible thing that so many great lives were cut so short. As a fallen officer survivour, my heart goes out to all those that knew and loved Officer Callemyn, especially to his wife. Know that you are not alone in this journey that you walk and that Charles will not be forgotten here in Winnipeg.

Officer Callemyn, thank you for helping to make this world a safer place. If you run into my late fiance Dennis up there give him a hug for all of us down here. It's been just over four years and we still miss him terribly.

Wishing you brighter and better days,

Charlie,
I'll be traveling to North Carolina for a few days in May, and I'm looking forward to spending some time with you at your final resting place. Things have been tough here in New York...with two more brother officers murdered at the hands of pure evil. Continue to watch over us...I pray that God will give strength to those families who suffer unspeakable pain from the passing of their fallen loved ones. Until we meet again my friend...

My thoughts and prayers are with Officer Callemyn's family, friends and fellow officers. I know first hand how tragic a time this is for all of you. The police family is an amazing one and I know you will all stick together and help each other heal. Please stay close to this family as I know how much love and laughter can help guide them through.

May God be with you all.

CJ,
I just wanted you to know that I think of you often..our time together at Duke was short, but I remember those long 12 hour shifts with you like they were yesterday. I'm proud to say that we shared a moment in time together, as partners, and that now, as I patrol the streets of Syracuse, and you..the streets of heaven, I take comfort in the fact that you are still there...watching my blind side and protecting me from above. For that brother, I am eternally grateful. See you in time Charlie..God be with your family.

Callemyn,

Last Thursday, April 5th, was a special day at my house. My little girl Callie turned 1. We also remembered it would also had been your birthday. We are still in such shock you are gone. My cell phone still has your number. Steve and I will always remember you and how you changed our lives just by being in it. You meant alot to us and will always hold a special place in our hearts. You were such a good friend and there for anyone who needed you. You had a amazing personality and was always joking and cutting up even when you were hurting or needing support yourself. You used to try to wind up my car when I picked Steve up from work and shined the hood with your behind as you slid across walking by. You were such a cut up. You will be remembered by all who knew you for the phenomenal personality you had and the fun everyone had when they were with you. You will also be remembered as a hero and as a fighter. You fought for this country and for the citizens of Durham. Happy Belated Birthday Callemyn. We love you and always will.

I will always remember the love in which he talked about his family and taking a motorcycle trip with his wife after he returned from overseas duty with the 805th MP BN. Every person at Duke Police who worked with him will never forget this funny, loving man.

We will all miss you.

It doesn't seem real that such a strong man is gone. I can't seem to erase your number from my phone. I just want to call to see if you will answer. I can still hear you in the halls at work. We always knew as soon as you entered HQ. At six in the morning we were all still asleep but you were always wide open and that's how you lived. You will always be my hero. Thanks for taking me to work when it snowed and being a great friend. Get a pool game ready for when I get there. I'm gonna beat you this time. You will never be forgotten.
