Officer Barber,

Thank you for your short time as a Police Officer serving and protecting the citizens of Seattle, Washington. Your tour-of-duty was cut short at the hands of a senseless crime....... May GOD bless you. May GOD bless your family, friends and Co-Workers as you grive the loss of a fine young man.

The thin blue line keeps getting thinner..........

"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God"

I live in Detroit Michigan, but my home is Seattle. I keep track of all of the news and things that are going on in my city. I was saddened to hear about the death of Officer Barber. It sickened me to see the pictures of the accident scene and how much damage was done to his patrol car and how little was done to the assilants vehicle. I grew up around the Seattle Fire Department as a child and young adult and I have had many friends in the department who have passed away in the line of duty including the 4 at the Pang Warehouse fire, and now another member of the brotherhood (Police, Fire, and EMS-Private and Municipal) has died in the line of duty. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Seattle Police Department, the Seattle Fire Department members who responded to the crash site, and especially, the Barber Family. May the Lord touch you and keep you in his arms during your time of grief

I met Lito only once, in a passing moment in the precinct while he was a Student Officer. It was a moment I'm sure he forgot immediately, overwhelmed by the totality of his arrival in policework as most of us were. Regrettably, I only have a vague memory of it as well. There is something which must be said, however.

Officer Barber enthusiastically pursued this career path, as most of us did, for you cannot arrive here by accident. Few in the community routinely acknowledge the daily sacrifices made by their law enforcement protectors.

Officer Barber, it is with sincere gratitude that I offer my thanks for your service. Moreover, thank you for faithfully accepting the responsibility and taking your turn "walking the point."

The policeman stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry a badge
can't always be a saint."

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at time I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgement of his god.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've born your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell"

As Christ said to his apostles, I'm sure Joselito would now say to us;

"And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you." John 16:22

Dear Family of Joselito.... although I personally didn't know Joselito I've heard lots of good things about him personally and his work ethics. Officer Megan Bruneau (SPD)used to have her office just a few feet from mine in the new Justice Center (Police Dept. Headquarters) @ 5th & Cherry. She spoke so highly of Joselito and how much accepted her as another Officer with SPD. My prayers and thoughts go out to all of you.

I never met you, Officer Barber, but you are my brother nonetheless. As a Seattle native with family still in the area, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for selflessly serving and protecting those I love and cherish. As Christ said to His disciples in John 15:13, "Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends." God's speed to you, Officer Joselito Barber. You have shown all of us the greatest love a person can ever show.

To the family of Officer J. Barber (Lito),

I express my deepest empathy in the time of grief for your family. Brother Barber you served only a short time but you shall never be forgotten in our memories as the days, months, and years pass on. Your presence will be sorely missed on the force and not even knowing what may have been in your future. God be with you, your family, and the Thin Blue Line at all times!!!!!!

It is wonderful to discover something that you love to do and another thing to realize your dreams and do it.

I am sorry for the loss of such an inspiring young man. Seattle was better for having Lito serving us.

To Lito's family: I had only two encounters with Lito, and in both he was a very polite, very personable young man. It is so senseless and sad that his life was snuffed out so quickly and needlessly.

Nothing can take away the pain you, and we at SPD, feel, but a favorite Bible verse of mine gives some comfort:

"If your heart is broken, you'll find God right there; if you're kicked in the gut, He'll help you catch your breath" Psalm 34:18 (from The Message version)

My thoughts and prayers are with your friends and family during this terrible tragedy. My contact with you was brief but memorable as I remember you coming in for appointments during the background process while I was working the front desk at Police Headquarters. You were so polite, kind and had a twinkle in your eyes over the excitement of becoming a police officer. God Bless you and your sacrifice always.

Lito... I am proud to have served with you. You should know your family is truly celebrating your life as they mourn your loss. I am amazed at the strength your mother has as she deals with your loss. She truly loves you and is proud of you beyond what words can describe. I will miss you Barber. We will never forget.

Lito... I didn't get a chance to meet you after dawning our uniform, however, I remember working off-duty at Home Depot with you while you were loss prevention there. I remember talking with you about testing for Seattle PD and what it takes to be a police officer. When I heard you had finally made it, I was proud of you in many ways. It is very unfortunate that your time was cut so short and long before you had a chance to truly enjoy the job. My prayers go out to you and your family. I remember you being a really good person and knowing this tells me that you are in a good place in good hands now. Rest in peace brother.

Somebody killed a Policeman today,
and part of America died.
A piece of the country he swore to protect
will be buried with him at his side.

The beat that he walked was a battlefield, too,
just as if he had gone off to war.
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half-mast,
to his name they will add a gold star.

The suspect who shot him will stand up in court,
with counsel demanding his rights;
While a young widowed mother, must work for her kids,
and spend many long, lonely nights.

Yes, someone killed a Policeman today,
maybe in your town or mine.
While we slept in comfort, behind our locked doors,
a cop put his life on the line.

Now his ghost walks the beat, on a dark city street,
and he stands by each rookie's side.
He answered the call.....of himself he gave all,
and part of America died.

Rest in Peace Brother. You have made the ultimate Sacrafice
