I was working Wilshire division the summer of 1979, I saw David parked on La brea near Washington blvd about one hour before this incident. I stopped and talked with Dave, I noticed his vest draped over the back of the drivers seat, it was about 90 degrees at 10:30 pm. I asked him to fill up the car because we were both assigned to STORM and I knew I would be driving the same shop. I left and got changed for rollcall. At the very start or rollcall we were ordered to respond directly to 29/Crenshaw for an officer down. It was David, he was in a pressure suit when I got there and talking to paramedics. I think it was my worst day on the job. This still haunts me to this day. Needless to say I wore my vest after that.
