It was 40 years ago, as we approached midnight in the eve of this day, that I rushed from the station to aid an officer in pursuit. As I came on scene I saw Dave aside his vehicle. We spoke, and he pointed to the direction of the suspect's flight.
We were classmates in the Academy and so proud of ourselves for so successfully having completed our time as probationary police officers just weeks prior. Little did I know, within that moment, that we would never speak again. His bravery, his awareness to duty, has resonated with me since. David, you will always be remembered.

Rest In Peace Brother. After 38 years your sacrifice is not forgotten

Officer Mike Robinson, (Ret)

I was David's classmate from the Academy. He and I both worked the same division (Wilshire) on probation. I wheeled out the month before David's murder and David was also due to be wheeled out soon. I remember waking up, turning the TV on and seeing the news and being stunned about his death and realizing that David paid ultimate price in seeking a career in law enforcement. David was also the first cop funeral I attended. I still remember it to this day. A young man and husband whose life was cut so very short. Rest in Peace David.

I was one of the four officers that found and arrested the suspect. What a coward he was. Even though still armed he couldn't get far enough away from that weapon as soon as we spotted him. Although he resisted at first he was quickly and efficiently taken into custody. He had quite a few injuries that were apparently received in the car crash the night before. We did not know Officer Kubly as we were from a different division but we were proud that we were able to help bring this terrible situation to a close.

I remember this incident well. It was shocking and sad. I was his age when I became a Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff 4 years after his murder. I never knew him but his death made an impact on me. I guess they all do. To those who loved him and lost him, from a stranger, I remember.

In honor of the death of Officer David Kubly, Wilshire Area will honor his in-the-line-duty death with a tribute to Officer Kubly in 2009, marking the 30 year anniversary of his passing. Thanks to retired Officer Karen Kubly for actively keeping David's memory alive. David will be honored by Wilshire Area during the 2009 Memorial Run on 5/30/09, along with Detective Janine Manji, who passed in 2009. The spirit of both David Kubly and Janine Manji has touched the personnel assigned to Wilshire Division and the ability to honor both on the same date is truly what makes the Wilshire Division a very special place to work.

To the family of Officer David Kubly, Wilshire plan's to make you the invited guests in October, during Wilshire's formal inspection. Captain Eric Davis intends to have you as his invited guests as part of the inspection party.

Last, but not least, I am currently writing the commendation which will allow the Department to award Officer Kubly's family the new Purple Heart Award, that was recently approved by the Los Angeles Police Commission. This new Award will be awarded to Officer Kubly's family, posthumously. I look forward to the date when the ceremony is set and you can be there for this presentation.

Officer Kubly's memory lives on. He could have easily simply gone EOW, rather than attempt to initiate a traffic enforcement vehicle pullover, of someone failing to stop for a red tri-light signal. The fact that it was a robbery suspect in a stolen vehicle was only discovered later.

Being the professional (even after the jerk led him in a vehicle pursuit and crashed), Officer Kubly ran up to the car to render aid to what he thought may have been an injured driver, only to be met by gunfire.

Officer Kubly:
Today, I spoke with retired LAPD Detective John Miller, who responded to the incident. He and I may not be related to You by blood, but we will never allow Your memory to die.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I saw David at the local cleaners the afternoon prior to his death. I was close to EOW and he was picking up a uniform for his SOW. He was excited and asked my opinion about some "Crager" wheels he had just purchased for his truck. I did not know that was the last time I would see him alive. The next morning, I found myself at the perimeter as other officers searched for his killer. Dave, your murder was the first impact early in my career that instilled in me the need to treat all our LE brothers and sisters with the upmost kindness and respect. Our job is a dangerous one and we must cherish each others presence at all times.
