Reflections for Officer Scott Allen Hylton

Scott was one of my snipers when I was the Scout Platoon Leader in Pulaski. He was a great Soldier, a great sniper, but most importantly, he was a great friend. For the sake of his posterity, I would like to leave a memory of Scott to his faithful wife and family. Once while out in the field during a force-on-force training exercise, we were moving quickly through the woods. Scott, who was carrying all the things in our SOP plus a monstrous ghillie suit and a sniper rifle, was bringing up the rear and seemed to be struggling. I had often kidded him for being "so old." I worked the length of the line to check on everyone and when I came to Scott, I asked him how he was doing. From behind a ball of tobacco he smiled and said he was "hurtin'." I told him I suspected we were being followed. He took a knee, pointed his sniper rifle rearward, and said, "They'll have to get through me first, Sir." Hylton family please know that Scott was a patriot and a great friend. Our Commonwealth and Country were better because of his impact on us and he lives on through the impact he had on us.

I rode the schoolbus with Scott for several years. I was a year ahead of him in school. We never really talked that much back then. We shared a lot of laughter later in life when he was working for the Hillsville Police Dept and I was a waitress at the Corner Restaurant. We would always joke and cutup when he came in to eat, but the one thing that was always shared was the love that he had for his family. Scott's life ended entirely too early.

Yep, still miss you! Every time I hear this song I think of you:

"If you get there before I do
Don't give up on me
I'll meet you when my chores are through
I don't know how long I'll be

But I'm not gonna let you down
Darling wait and see
And between now and then
Til I see you again

I'll be loving you
Love, Me."

I've already blown a couple of things and I'm sorry...

Til I see you again

I'll be loving you
Love, Me

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 9th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.

I pray for solace for all those that love and remember you for I know both the pain and pride are forever. Your family is in my heart's embrace. Thanks to your family and friends for sharing their memories and devotion to you through their reflections.

Rest In Peace.

A man in blue has lost his life in service of law.
The love that makes this sacrifice the greatest love of all.
A Police man was killed today, the reason I cannot say.
I don't know why he had to die.
The man in blue died for me and you;
we must remember him too.
Flags fly low, let use bow in prayer
for fallen police men everywhere;
and remember this: that they are missed.
The badge burns bright like an evening star
free from a world of war.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

It's been 4 years and I still think about that day and wish I could have done something more than call 911 from my car. You are a hero and I pray for your family.

I still doesn't seem real. How can it be 4 years already? I guess it has been that long. I hope you are taking good care of my daddy up there in heaven. I find myself missing those that meant so much to me more and more each day. I have started taking some Criminal Justice courses and boy could I use your help right now. I saw that beautiful little girl of yours some time back. She had a blast playing with my two. I can't believe how much she has changed and what a smart girl she is too. I hope and pray that Kris made it through this day alright. I think about her often and hope she's doing well. I miss you Scott. Take care of my loved ones up there.

It has been 4 years since that terrible morning. Still, not a day goes by that I don't think about something you taught me. I miss you as much today as I did 4 years ago. Keep watch over us all.

I came across Scott's name on this site of many heroes and wanted to stop at his page and leave a reflection. I know the pain that his loved ones feel as they start each day for the rest of their lives. There are no magic words of comfort I can offer except that he is a true hero and heroes never die. He will never be forgotten.
