I live and work over three hours away from Grand Prairie. I met AJ at a training. He came up to me and asked me if I knew of one of his Coast Guard buddies that now works for my department, APD. I smiled as I realized how small the world is. AJ’s buddy sat next to me in the Robbery Unit. Rest in Peace sir.

AJ, words cannot express how shocked and saddened I was to hear of this. Our department lost a great man. I’ll miss the phone calls and texts we shared when tracking down wanted subjects. You will always be remembered, and your family will be taken care of. Losing you has left a hole here at the PSB that can never be filled. May God shine his perpetual light upon you. We have the watch from here, And know you’ll be watching over us.

There's a legend in the Coast Guard. The names and places change with time...but the legend remains.

On a terrible storm tossed night, a freighter was pushed ashore by unrelenting waves generated by hurricane force winds. The crew looked on in terror when they realized their lifeboats had been ripped to shreds by the surf. They solemnly gazed at each other, knowing that they would probably never see another sunrise.

Little did they know that a buzz of activity was surrounding a normally sleepy fishing village several miles away. Townsfolk ran towards the town docks when they realized that the local Coast Guard crew was readying their boat for the rescue.

One man ran up to the Coasties as they made ready to get underway. Surely they had to understand that the waves were too big for such a tiny little boat. And even if they made it through the inlet, how were they going to get close enough to rescue the crew? Frantically he yelled that it was madness to even think about going out in this storm.

One grizzled surfman stopped from his duties for just a second and gazed at the terrified man. A slight smile came to his lips as he said, "Coast Guard regulations state that we've got to got out, but nothing says we have to come back."

Thank God for police officers like Officer A. J. Castaneda. Who like the Coasties of old did not swerve from his duties, but went out with his boots on, trying to make this country a better place for all of us.
