The definition of a hero is someone who runs toward danger to help others, not knowing what their fate may be. MA Mayo, you epitomize what it is to be a hero. May you rest in peace and god be with your family during this tough time.

My prayers and thoughts are with the family, friends and loved ones of MA2 Mark Mayo. He gave his life carrying out his duty in the most unlikely of places - on a US Navy Warship, USS MAHAN. His sacrifice exemplifies that which most military members are ready willing and able to make daily, but through the grace of God aren't asked to make. Thank you for your sacrifice, may the wings of Angels carry you into heaven and the love of those you left behind speed you on your journey. Fair winds and following seas Shipmate, we who you have left behind have the watch in your stead.

Petty Officer First Class Kurt Murdock

Mrs. Mayo, I am sorry that you lost your son Mark who exemplified courage and heroism with his unwavering response to this breach of security. He ran towards danger to help shipmates and indeed the security of his ship and crew. He should be forever known for this brave act. It would have been an honor to serve with him both in the Navy and on the Cleveland Police Department. My prayers are with you, family and friends.
