Petty Officer Mayo, you knew before enlisting that your own life might be a price you'd have to pay for others. You accepted that. And you paid the price. Your unselfish act enabled so many others to live. You are the embodiment of the true American hero.

My condolences to the family and friends of this hero. There is no doubt that his selfless act saved the lives of others that day. A hero yes but a family has lost a loved one and my heart goes out to them. The Navy for sure has lost a true shipmate. I look forward to seeing this hero being honored throughout time and I would love to see the USS MAYO commissioned in his honor. My prayers go out to the family and friends.
