"The Final Inspection"
The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"
The policeman squared his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.
There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

Matt-

Words cannot express how much we miss you and how difficult the last couple of days have been. I'm not sure how we will get through the ones to come, and what those days will hold. Your leaving us so suddenly has refinforced how precious each moment is. I just saw you a couple of weeks ago, and was giving you grief for your haircut, telling you that your helmet was so tight it was ruining your "hairdo".

It seems like only yesterday we started the academy together... remembering your laugh and how I barely squeezed past you to get a lower IBM#.

Love ya, bro. You will be missed. We've got it from here.

Just knowing you are no longer in this world makes it feel a little colder. Thank you for teaching me how to be confident and courageous and how to use humor to get through the difficult times. I have thought of you often over the years and smiled. You were loved. You are loved still.

Matt was one of my best friends and we moved here from KC the same week in 1999 and became even closer friends. We would meet for happy hour almost every Friday to talk about our week and lives. I'd always get a text message from him on Fridays "HH today?" I'll so miss that message coming every week, but will always look for it and remember the good laughs we had and the true friend I'll always miss. I was so proud of him when he finally got through the difficut requirments of becoming a motorcycle patrol officer. He lived for what he wanted and made it happen. Cheers my friend!
