Reflections for Sergeant Joseph Anthony Bergeron

To the family and friends of Sgt Bergeron,
Our hearts across miles are touched and each time another hero falls it reminds us and renews the anguish we felt last Halloween night when our friend Seattle PD officer was gunned down. Know the common bond between officers, families and friends binds us and this is stronger than the evil that takes our officers. Have faith and remain strong. He is in good company now with those that watch over us.

My relationship with Joe Bergeron was professional and began in the spring of 2008. I worked with him on Maplewood’s problem properties and from my first contact with Joe, I knew he was a police officer who loved his work and did whatever he was asked to with great skill and confidence.

Every city has problem properties in both stable and shaky neighborhoods. Joe had the amazing ability to walk into almost any situation and cool the tempers with his easy-going, say-the-right-words-at-the-right-time approach. If Joe had been able to speak to his killer before he pulled the trigger he might have diffused the situation. Unfortunately this turned out to be the one where he was not allowed to work his magic.

Joe kept me informed of the addresses that I should not go to without calling him first: the ex-cons, the domestic abusers, the properties under surveillance for possible illegal activity. People who worked on problem properties in other cities were surprised the police department assigned a specific officer as my contact. I was very fortunate, knowing Joe would be there whenever I suspected a situation might require his calming police presence.

Saturday morning, in one brief savage and senseless moment, Joe Bergeron was taken from us. If his killer had only allowed Joe to speak, I’m sure he would have heard the right words, spoken in the right way and we would not be grieving his loss right now.

I am so very sad that this had to happen to a police officer who was dedicated to serving the community. How senseless this act of violence was! I feel for the family and my thoughts are with them during this time of unbelievable grief.

His Judgment Day:
The officer stood and faced his God, Which must always come to pass. He hoped his shoes were shinning, Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, Officer, How shall I deal with you? Have you always turned the other cheek To my church have you been true?"
The officer squared his shoulder and said, "No, Lord, I guess I aint, Because those of us who carry badges can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays, And at times my talk was rough, And sometimes I've been violent Because the streets are tough.
But I never took a penny That wasn't mine to keep.. Though I worked a lot of overtime, when the bills got too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help Though at times I shook with fear. And sometimes, God forgive me, I've wept an unmanly tear.
I know I don't deserve a place among the people here. They never wanted me around except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here, Lord, it needn't be so grand. I never expected or had too much, But if you don't...I'll understand.
There was silence all around the throne, where the saints often trod. As the officer waited quietly for the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, Officer. You've borne your burdens well. Come walk a beat on heaven's streets, You've done your time in hell"

You will never know the true burden of a Law Enforcement Officer until you wear the badge yourself. The job isn't easy, the burden isn't easy, and what Officers have to go through everyday isn't easy. You may not like Law Enforcement Officers but have respect for them, for one day it may be you they save. TO MY FALLEN BROTHER....GOD BLESS YOU,WATCH OVER YOU AND WATCH OVER THE FAMILY YOU WERE FORCED TO LEAVE BEHIND. Thank You for your service.

For Sergeant Joseph Bergeron:

This incident is a classic example of how quickly the officer on patrol can encounter death and how other officers can be in a fight for his or her life. Patrol is busy, active and serious work. It can even sometimes be boring. But, suddenly, everything we have ever trained-for is needed in an instant. Our brother Joe, regretfully, is yet another sad reminder of how quickly things can go bad. The cowards who gunned Joe down and attempted to do the same to another officer are now minus one low-life among them. Thankfully, a quick apprehension will see that justice is done for the others.
We pray for Joe's family, friends, co-workers and all who care about him. We pray for the officer who was injured here and that he recovers fully. We are thankful for his survival and admire his courage.
I am proud render Sergeant Joseph Bergeron, a soldier-of-the-law, a final salute.
