Reflections for Police Officer Jose Lazaro Somohano

Thursday, September 13, 2007 was the darkest day of my career. Your untimely death however was not in vein and in a time of tragedy, I found hope and a renewed pride in our chosen profession. As a result of the events which took your life, an entire community came together in honor of you and your 3 brave partners. In the moments and days that followed, I kept hoping that you could see the tremendous amount of love and support that poured in from our law enforcement family and the community . Even if in a small way, the show of support was a comfort to me and I hope it was to your family too. All too often, the love and admiration we feel for one another is not expressed in life so, I hope that in death, you know how valued and loved you are. I am regretful that I did not have the honor of knowing you personally but I am grateful and proud to know that our guardian angel is one of MDPD’s finest. Your family will forever be in my prayers.
REST IN PEACE BROTHER.

To Police Officer Jose Somohano's family, your son, husband, father, brother, sister will never be forgotten by all those he touch and all those who he never met. His name will be remembered in the stories that all of those who had the honor of knowing him will tell. I did not know him myself however, he was my son's FTO. I can see that Jose taught him how to be a good police officer.

I cannot say much more that hasn't already been said, just remember, Jose will not be forgotten.

Officer Somohano, may God accept you into his Kingdom as the true archangel that you are. For your duty here on earth has been fulfilled. I know that today you find yourself “09” in heaven looking down on us. You made the ultimate sacrifice, as a member of the community I am grateful for your selfless service, but as a Law Enforcement Officer I mourn your passing.

To Jose’s family: I know that at times like these it is difficult to comprehend Jose’s untimely passing at the hands of that “person” as a deed of God. But dig deep and believe in him, for I am sure God’s plans includes Jose in great things. Here on Earth Jose is a HERO and will FOREVER be in our hearts and prayers. God, bless those who were close to Jose and help them cope with his passing.

Although we never met, you have changed my life in ways that I could never express in this brief reflection and I have shed my fair share of tears since you left us. You have provided me with a new perspective on life and you have made me prouder than I have ever been to be a police officer. I lose sleep thinking of what you went through and what your family has had to and continues to endure. Rest assured that we are taking care of your family, while our brothers are "taking care" of those that contributed to your tragic death. I eagerly await the day when I will have the honor to stand by your side in heaven and thank you for what you did on September 13, 2007. May you rest in peace for all eternity and watch over all of us who remained behind.

A PART OF AMERICA DIED

Somebody killed a police officer today
And a part of America died.
A piece of our country he swore to protect
Will be buried with him at his side.

Somebody killed a police officer today
It happened in your town and mine.
While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors
A cop put his life on the line.

Now his ghost has the beat
On a dark city street
And he stands at each rookie's side.
A cop answered the call
Of himself gave his all
And a part of America died.
