This was an incredibly hard day for MDPD and all involved. It was senseless for our brother to have died because some scumbag coward used an AK47 to mow down a husband, father, son and brother officer...........SOMO may you rest in peace and may God watch over your family until you are all together again.................

Jose,

I attended training with you throughout your career. You were always such a respectful and sweet man. Always talking about your wife and your two children. As a woman in law enforcement, I admired that. I remember when you were a Detective for DCPS and then when you were first applying with MDPD. You were so excited to work for the county. Then shortly after you were hired, you once again became a Detective. The day you were shot changed my life in so many ways and made me realize what was truly important in life. I saw your wife at the St. Michael's Feast about a year ago and I was FINALLY able to tell her how sorry I was for her loss and what an amazing husband and father I thought you were. Without a doubt you are in heaven my brother in blue. I know you watch over all of us. God bless your family! Till we meet again...

Ofcr. Somohano,

Next police academy class is my turn to hit the training grounds. I will be on the same ground and training field you stepped on. Everyday I remember to give 110% on everything that I do and want to achieve in life. Your dedication and your memory will always live in every Miami Dade officer who patrols the streets of Dade county. My condolences goes out to your family. Watch from above and protect us.

I honor Jose dedication to his duty and the community. I lost my best friend/brother Officer Wayne Clark on January 10th, 2006 after twenty three years. We severed together for nineteen years in NJDOC. I hope everyone understands the pride Jose had while doing what he loved. I pray for those he left behind and know that he still love you and will be with you everyday. I understand the pain, but know that the hurt will diminish. It will never stop but his memory will also be yours to keep for ever. Remember his smile and love for you and everyone.

During a bad time when I missed my partner I think of a poem “Pennies from Heaven”. I think of this poem when I find a penny. I think;

Today on the ground I found a penny,
but not just a penny.
This penny was from an Angle in Heaven.
When the Angle misses you and
he will just toss one down just to cheer you up.

Take a moment and smile and save the penny. You to will find that Jose will send you pennies. These pennies are from your special Angle in Heaven.

Jose may God be with you and all you love.

No te preocupes herman mio, que nostros seguiresmos la lucha contra el mal en tu nombre.

To the family and loved ones of Officer Jose Somohano, his fellow officers with the Miami-Dade Police Department, and most especially to Jose:

On this the first anniversary week of your tragic death, please know that you are honored and revered today and everyday.

From all the loving reflections left about you, I can see that you were an amazing man and what a grievous loss your loved ones have endured because of your brutal murder.
May your spirit continue to soar and your memory continue to inspire. You are loved and missed by so many.

I also pray for the continued healing, both physical and emotional, of the three wounded officers.

Rest in Peace, Jose. A body is but for a lifetime, but spirits and souls are for eternity and yours is forever part of those who call you beloved.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the service Jose gave to his community and the citizens of Florida, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on September 13, 2007.

I didnt know you personally but i feel we are all born with this gift to do what we do. Therefore i think we can all relate in this job. I want you to know that seeing your family the day of your funeral touched my heart so much, especially your daughter I cannot forget her face. I have a two year old and its hard to get the image out. But I also know that she along with the rest of your family will always know the hero they had, the hero that is still protecting them from our skies above. God bless you and your family today and always.

Jose,
My friend, my partner I have not had what it takes to write to you. Having to write this is one of the hardest messages that I have sent, but I know that you would have done it to. I need you to know that not having you around has killed me inside. Knowing that you’re always with me and looking over me has given me some comfort (Not a lot but enough). I hope that I have been there for you’re family as you would have been there for mine. I really wish that I could pick up the phone and ask you “Is this the right thing to do?” I know you would have answered “You’re fucking retarded Espi, what is wrong with you.”, Shortly after, I would have been smiling knowing that you were 100% correct. You have been my true brother and trust me when I say this “Denise, Jonny, Danny, Joe and I will never be the same and fell the same way.”

I, we will never forget you.

It has been passed six months and a day does not go by that I don't stop thinking of you. Our lives changed so much due to one person, yet I know you want us to move on. It is difficult and at times very discouraging, yet we have no choice. I hear mom cry and it breaks my heart. All I could say to her is that your time to do good on earth was up and GOD needed you upstairs, yet there is not much comfort with my words. I wish I would have hugged you last time I saw you on August 2007, yet all I remember is your camouflage shorts you were wearing that day. I am so proud of you and again I will strive to live my life to be at least half the man you are. I miss you bro and will look you up once in a while. Love you man.

My father was a police officer for over 30 years and unfortunately he knew nearly everyone on this list. I learned about Officer Somohano's death while I was and currently still am deployed to OEF. I was very upset when my father told what had happened. It felt as if I had lost one of my own soldiers. Even though I did not know Officer Somohano I know about the bond that exist between LEO because it is the same as being in the military. My platoon and I offer our deepest condolences to Officer Somohano's family and friends and to the Miami Dade County Police Department. Know that his heroic actions and that of all LEO are heard around the world. Be in peace Officer Somohano and watch over all your brothers and sister in all Law Enforcement agencies and the Military.

Brother,
There is not a day I live that I don't think of you. I am so proud of you, yet I/we miss you more. The street by the house has been named after you and it is such a beautiful street sign. I would trade all of that and my own life to have you back, yet GOD chose it this way. I have learned to accept it and all I ask is to show us the way. You are truly a hero and will always be remembered as such. Remember one thing, you will always be the one I look up too. No doubt you are it.

Love you brother!

On February 15th, 2008 a street will be named after Officer Jose Somohano. Located at SW 56 Street (Miller Dr.) and 157 Avenue, his name and memory will not only live on in the hearts of those who loved him, respected him and served alongside but thousands who never knew him personally will drive along this road and remember a fallen hero who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
