Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Special Agent Barry Lee Bush

I briefly read Agent Barry Bush's testimony in the US v. OSAMA BIN Laden trial relating to the Kobe bombings in Africa. He was well organized and his thoughtful responses indicated his thorough law enforcement knowledge and meticulous collection of the evidence in that important case. Now I read he was instrumental in making a connection between anti-abortion madman Kopp in the tragic killing of Dr. Slepian during a search he conducted while based in the Newark FBI office. Agent Barry Bush was killed during an inherently dangerous field operation, one which he had probably done numerous times during his career. This guy is a true American hero and his service to our nation will not be forgotten.

Barry Bush was my friend.

We went to high school together in Pottstown, Pa. After college, at my first job, I worked with Barry in a Juvenile Detention Center in Montgomery County, Pa. Barry had been employed there for a year before me; he was my mentor. We both moved up through the ranks with me following behind him each promotion. When he left the detention center for his first police job, he created a document to leave for incoming staff to read (Bush's proverbs on counseling). It was a couple of pages in length. I remember his final words of wisdom: Be Friendly, Be Firm, and Be Fair. That was Barry.

As far back as I can remember, he talked about becoming an FBI agent. He worked for Boyertown and Pottstown Police Departments before being hired by the FBI and beginning his first assignment in Kansas 20 years ago. Before I moved from Pa to Tx, Barry and I worked out together. I taught him Karate, he taught me wrestling. We were always good friends-we were brothers.

We kept in touch these past 20 years by letters, telephone calls and visits, but never as often as we would have liked. He was funny, ethical and just a great guy. He was also a little guy, but he had the courage and determination to overcome any size disadvantage. He would have your back if there was trouble.

I always "knew" he was invincible. We all know the dangers and risks of police work, but I "knew" Barry would rise above them; I "knew" that nothing would ever happen to Barry. And even now we see that it was a fluke thing that took him down. It doesn't seem real, yet something inside me knows it is real because I keep wiping tears from my eyes.

You were taken too soon, my brother...there are still too many dark places that need your light. There is still so much more you and I needed to talk about and laugh about. There were supposed to be lots of years remaining for us to catch up on each other's lives.

You left quite a deep legacy of friends and people who love and admire you. This planet is a better place because of people like you. Thanks for being in my life. Thanks for being my friend. I'll miss you, my brother.

Barry Bush was my friend.

To the Bush Family -- our police family in Georgia wishes to express our most profound sympathy in the passing of Barry. I once was assigned to work with the Essex County Strike Force where I was taught wiretapping techniques for gambling investigations. That was 1973 and I have thought often of the outstanding local, state and federal law enforcement officers that I had the pleasure of meeting in New Jersey and New York during the time I was there. I worked undercover narcotics investigations for a number of years here in Georgia, from Rabun Gap to Tybee Light. If I wasn't buying the drugs, I was supervising the arrests of the drug dealers. I was a happy man! I don't think many of us that come through the tunnel of a law enforcement career see the light at the end until it is upon us. We who made it surely owe our everlasting friendship to those who for one reason or another, didn't make it. I had the honor of knowing and working with Sgt. JJ Brown of the Savannah Police Department who died after being accidently shot by a fellow officer many years ago. I have known many fine local, state and federal law enforcement officers here in Georgia. They are all human and they will make mistakes from time-to-time. But for the Grace of God, go I. Our heart goes out to the Bush Family, Barry's friends and co-workers. And, to all of his fellow officers in New Jersey, keep the flame going; get the bad guys; I wish Barry and I were with you! God Bless, Walt & Len Brooks and sons, Lawrenceville, Georgia

My heart goes out to the family, co-workers, and friends of Special Agent Bush. Please find comfort in the fact that his death was not in vain.
