Footprints in the Sand

One night I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord. Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky.

In each scene I noticed footprints in the sand. Sometimes there were two sets of footprints, other times there was one only.

This bothered me because I noticed that during the low periods of my life, when I was suffering from anguish, sorrow or defeat, I could see only one set of footprints, so I said to the Lord,

“You promised me Lord,
that if I followed you, you would walk with me always. But I have noticed that during the most trying periods of my life there has only been one set of footprints in the sand. Why, when I needed you most, have you not been there for me?”

The Lord replied, “The years when you have seen only one set of footprints, my child, is when I carried you.”

Our prayers and blessings go out to Sergeant Plouff and family. We at the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office admire you for utmost professionalsim, compassion and dedication to your career but most of the focus of love for your family. We will all be here for your family. God bless.

To the family, friends, and officers that knew Sgt Plouff, my thoughts and prayers are with you as you face the trying times ahead of you. Please know your not alone.

Here I am, lost in the light of the moon that comes through my window
Bathed in blue, the walls of my memory divide the thorns from the roses
It's you and the roses

Touch me and I will follow in your afterglow
Heal me from all this sorrow
As I let you go I will find my way when I see your eyes
Now I'm living in your afterglow

Here I am, lost in the ashes of time, but who wants tomorrow?
In between the longing to hold you again
I'm caught in your shadow, I'm losing control
My mind drifts away, we only have today

Touch me and I will follow in your afterglow
Heal me from all this sorrow
As I let you go I will find my way
I will sacrifice 'til the blinding day when I see your eyes
Now I'm living in your afterglow

When the veils are gone as I let you go, as I let you go

Touch me and I will follow in your afterglow
Heal me from all this sorrow
As I let you go I will find my way, I will sacrifice
Now I'm living in your afterglow

Bathed in blue, the walls of my memory divide the thorns from the roses
It's you who is closest

--"If you find it in your heart to care for somebody else, you will have succeeded." -- Maya Angelou

Aloha Sergeant Howard J. Plouff,
Thank you for your service and dedication to your community and your country. You and all officers that continue to lay your lives on the line and pay the ultimate sacrifice to keep our communities and country safe, will NEVER be forgotten.

I personally pledge, (after one of Hawaii's own, Honolulu Police Officer Steve Favela, lost his life last year in the line of duty protecting our Commander in Chief, President George W. Bush), to become a continuum; a keeper of the ODMP light. That light is in the form of an ODMP tribute. People from all walks of life, regardless of age, race, religion, profession, education, and geographical location can share here.

This "LIGHT" comes from within the heart and soul of every person who cares to share a word or two on behalf of each and every fallen officer. Every fallen officer is a hero. The ODMP; Officer Down Memorial Page gives us a place to come together and share our feelings as one family. May we find solace as we give solace to the families who have lost a loved one.

Sergeant Howard J. Plouff, God Bless you. You are a hero. As we say in Hawaii, “You are`Ohana.” “You are Family.” No one will ever be able to replace you for you were unique and very special. No one; not in this lifetime. May God allow you to rest in His Divine peace. I wish you, your loved ones, and your fellow officers, peace and love beyond all understanding. I honor you today. You will NEVER be forgotten.

** May this Hawaiian prayer give all those who read it comfort. **

THE PEACE OF " I "
KA MALUHIA O KA "I"

Peace be with you, All My Peace,
O ka Maluhia no me oe, Ku'u Maluhia a pau loa,

The Peace that is " I ", the Peace that is "I am".
Ka Maluhia o ka "I", owau no ka Maluhia,

The Peace for always, now and forever and evermore.
Ka Maluhia no na wa a pau, no ke'ia wa a mau a mau loa aku.

My Peace " I " give to you, My Peace " I " leave with you,
Ha'awi aku wau I ku'u Maluhia ia oe, waiho aku wau I ku'u Maluhia me oe,

Not the world's Peace, but, only My Peace,
The Peace of " I ".

A'ole ka Maluhia o ke ao aka, ka'u Maluhia wale no,
Ka Maluhia o ka "I".

I am very saddened to hear of the tragic loss of such a fine veteran officer. SGT Plouff will be remembered for his brave sacrifice, service and dedication to all. I offer my sincere condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. This is so insane and absoultely senseless. Winston Salem PD has suffered such an excessive share of officer deaths in recent decades.

While we mourn the loss, we must not lose sight of celebrating the life. Heaven's platoon under St. Michael now has another member of the honor guard, as SGT Plouff had the final rollcall in this life. Greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends (John 15:13).

I pray that the perpretrator is brought to justice in this vicious crime. God bless and be safe out there brother and sister officers.

I remember the old days when the drunken idiots duked it out in the parking lot. Now you have to worry about getting shot. Thats why it will take men such as Sergeant Plouff, with courage and dedication to hopefully get us back where we once were. I salute you "Sergeant" and thank you. God bless.

Winston-Salem lost a hero and a dedicated Officer yesterday. I worked with Howard for several years and was proud to serve with him. Howard was a model for police officers and supervisors, he died LEADING his people into battle, which is the only way he knew and would not have it any other way. To a fallen comrade, friend, and hero I bid you farewell here, but will see you again. To Sgt. Plouff's entire family, we are here and praying for you.
Rest in peace, my brother.

We offer our heartfelt sympathy to the family, friends and colleagues of Sergeant Plouff and we honor his distinguished service to the cause of justice and peace. Sadly, our nation has lost one of its finest citizens, a community has lost a friend and protector, and a family has lost an example of character and courage who they will love and respect forever. Today, because of the sacrifice Sergeant Plouff has made, the house of freedom is stronger, sturdier, and more secure.

To the family and friends of Sergeant Plouff, I would like you to know that a lot of people pray for you, and my hope is that their prayers will give you the strength necessary to move on. Just as you were always with him when he walked the beat or patrolled the streets, know that he will always be with you - wherever you may be. In the days to follow, may you be strengthened by the fact that Sergeant Plouff is a man distinguished by exceptional courage and will always be admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. You, your family and your sacrifice will never be forgotten.
