Officer Whittington was shot and killed after he and his partner responded to a first degree burglary. The suspect had just stabbed an 82-year-old resident several times and stole a pistol as he fled from his home. When Officer Whittington stopped a man fitting the suspect's description he was shot and killed.

The 25-year-old suspect was apprehended and sentenced to 150 years in prison for second degree murder, burglary, and assault with intent to kill.

Officer Whittington had been with the agency for three years.
