I did not know Howard personally, but my father was very good friends with him. I know Howard is in a much better place, looking down on us right now. I know that it means so much for all his coworkers and complete strangers to leave such heartfelt reflections. He gave his life defending those who cannot defend themselves, and his sacrifice, along with all the other fallen officers around the world, will never be forgotten. Rest In Peace Howard.

As the wife of an officer, I know first hand hard it is to be married to one. He has missed birthdays, holidays and many celebrations throughout the yrs. He has also delivered a baby, talked someone into not committing suicide and taken many pounds of drugs off the street just to name a few. It doesn't matter what state the officer is from, his death is felt by everyone in the law enforcement community. Sergeant Plouff, his wife, kids and the Winston-Salem Police department will be in my prayers. You will not be forgotten Sergeant Plouff.

Though I never knew him, he was part of my Law Enforcement family and I will mourn this deep loss the rest of my life. My heart aches with all the losses we have suffered, and continue to suffer, through the years. God is our only peace through such incidents & our comfort is the assurance that He will judge the guilty.

Another senseless tragedy
Another day of grief,
Another day of praying
To help us find relief.

Relief from bitter anguish
Relief from rage so great,
Relief from lenient justice
Which continues to seal our fate.

Relief from heartache’s torment
As we continue on,
Oh, the awesome loss of brotherhood
Now that you are gone.

Though our hearts are deeply broken
And our tears forever flow,
There’s a comforting assurance
That now with God you go.

We know that you are welcome
Now at Heaven’s gate,
While meeting brothers & sisters
Who also met such fate.

The family of Law Enforcement
Knows no distance here or there,
As we recall in comfort
You await us there.

This is a most difficult time, and no words can describe the pain that you are all feeling right now. But remember what you do have, each other, and everyone at the WSPD. You will all grow closer as a family as you hold each others hands and walk with each other down this most difficult road. My prayers are with you all.

Growing up as a young boy in Winston-Salem I had the privledge and pleasure of getting to know many of the fine Officers of the Winston-Salem Police Department. My father Rev. Fred Merkert served the Winston-Salem Police Department as one of the Department's Chaplain's from 1982 to 1993. It was these interactions and positive impressions left on me as a young child that helped lead me into the Law Enforcement profession. I remember in the eairly morning hours when my dad was called out for the tragic deaths of Lt. Aaron Tise, Officer Mike Jennings and Officer Bobby Beane. I remember how sad he was as he would leave the house headed for PSC and how he cried when he placed the black band on his badge. I learned at an earily age that the Winston-Salem Police Department only hires the finest caliber people to staff it's ranks as police officers and I have no doubt that Sgt. Plouff was as good as they come. I still consider Winston-Salem my home and it brings me great sadness to hear that another hometown hero has been lost so tragicly. My deepest sympathies, thoughts and prayers go out to Sgt. Plouff's family and to my brothers and sisters in the WSPD.

"Its not how these officers died that made them heros, Its how they lived".

On behalf of the Merkert Family and the ACCD PD, rest in peace Sarge and may God bless your family and the WSPD. Your courage, dedication and professionalism will never be forgotten and will serve as an inspiration to all for years to come.

I will start with I am so sorry for the loss that the world experienced on February 23rd, yet I will struggle to find a smile knowing that Howard has a mission in a better place in the presence of the Lord and his Angles. Every thing Howard did he did for a reason. He challenged his officers to be the best and to do it right the first time. I can’t explain in words how big of a loss this is. Sgt. Plouff your battle is over, your memory will never be forgotten. I thank you for the light you gave to me over the years and to everyone else you were around. You never had a frown or let your bad days reflect on those you came to work with. I admired the resolve you showed throughout the years to better yourself, your friends, co workers and the officers you led. I was honored to work with Howard, he showed a sincere concern for his soldiers. He was a member of a unique family of Law Enforcement Officers, a brother, a friend and a role model for all. I will miss the fun times we had on the streets, the lunch time talks and the sad times we endured and most of all I will miss you, my friend. I will treasure all of your memories and I thank the Lord for the opportunity I had to know and work for Howard, it was a blessing. 330 we will miss you! rest in peace brother.
